Tara and I had been together for a little over a year at that point. The stardust was out of Tara's eyes, but we were still solidly in the good years before things went south and she left the wreckage of us for San Francisco.
That would come later. This isn't the story of that.
I was a star. My light shone down on my city, even on smoggy summer days, but I was still understanding of the shape of what that meant.

Summary
When the twentieth century was a newborn, San Francisco wore the sash for Wickedest City in America and Financial Heart of the West Coast on account of all the selling of flesh and theft and murder. Also, all the shipping, rails, and factories, which amounted to the same thing by a different path. The Barbary Coast and the Financial District were stacked cheek to jowl on the mud and garbage flats created when ships ran themselves aground in the rush to gold, and not much had changed since.
Ash came into this world in an ash tree on account of being abandoned there. Edoaurd was born in a castle built by a robber baron with money to burn. Both of them considered themselves unnatural creatures until they met.
They were two sinners—on no account saints—what with all the bondage and the general fornicating. It took them a bit to become the sort of folks that a city on the edge might need when the going got rough, but it's in such events that our story occurs.Series
