It’s wholly unexpected – for Steve, that is. He supposes Eddie must’ve planned the whole thing. Steve thinks he must be a fool for not seeing through Eddie’s undeniably random request to join him on his usual Thursday night grocery shop. Steve has bought the food and drinks for Eddie’s birthday parties for the last six years; he had never not been trusted to do it alone.
They hadn’t even been arguing. Not tonight, at least. They’d joked about the state of pop music in the car, and Eddie is wearing Steve’s sweatshirt. So really, Steve can’t be blamed for being a little blindsided.
“I don’t think this is working,” Eddie says, standing by the shopping cart. Steve is holding a bag of frozen peas.
