Summary
Hanahaki disease is a distinctly human affliction, and even in humans it is rare. One must have a genetic predisposition for it, as well as end up in a situation where they repress incredibly strong feelings for someone rather than act on them.
It was believed that since Spock is majority Vulcan, copper-blood and all, that he would not be predisposed.
And yet, the petals still fall.

Summary
When Spock begins eating three times his normal intake and his stomach starts growling audibly on the bridge, Jim Kirk does what Jim Kirk does — he notices, he shows up, and he refuses to let Spock push through it alone. What neither of them knows is that the hunger is only the beginning. That Spock's body has already decided something his mind has been refusing to acknowledge for four years and seven months. That the Vulcan Science Academy will call it a physiological cycle and McCoy will call it above his pay grade and T'Pring, from Vulcan, will call it by its right name — the human, she says, with the precision of someone who has been aware of him for three years through a bond worn thin by distance and disuse.
Spock calls it worse than that.
Spock calls it Jim.
A slow burn set during the five year mission, in which Spock's body knows what it wants long before Spock is willing to name it, Jim Kirk has always been paying attention, T'Pring is more understanding than expected, McCoy is a better doctor than anyone deserves, and the hunger is a metaphor and also completely literal.

Nearly everyone else on the Enterprise has gone on shore leave, but Captain Kirk is uneasy leaving the ship after a few recent encounters. Spock has plans, however, and has been heavily anticipating the opportunity to indulge in taking his Captain to a museum, lingering in a planetarium... savoring poetry... sharing a treat in a cafe...
Spock has realized a few important things about what Jim knows, and doesn't know, and wants, and won't allow himself to want. But Spock is feeling a little bold. It just may be a bit more than he accounted for in the itinerary.

Uhura nods, silent.
Of course. Of course he fucking does. Because life couldn’t possibly only be cruel enough to deposit at Jim’s side the most intelligent, incandescent, and attractive man from here to the end of the universe - couldn’t simply make that same man loyal to a fault or attuned to Jim’s every move - on top of it all, life just had to drive Jim’s head into that same fumbling brick wall every single time. He can’t even be angry at himself, only disappointed. Jim should have known that what is most important to him could only ever have been Spock.
