    On the good days, Dan can acknowledge that he’s doing well, in the grand scheme of things.

    When he’s in the pit, though, the darkness swallows him whole. He scrambles around blindly but all he can feel are the walls that he can’t climb. It’s as true now as it was ten years ago: when he’s living through the worst of it, it’s nearly impossible for him to understand that as things get worse, so too will they get better.

    But just like ten years ago, always, in that darkness, there’s Phil.
