"Whoa, whoa, whoa, sorry. It's okay. You're okay-  you hit your head when the elevator stopped" the voice broke through the fog. Then, the hands started prodding against the painful lump on his forehead. Buck recoiled in pain, and the voice returned, murmuring soft apologies.

Buck blinked a few times, shaking away the remaining bits of the disorientation. A moment later, he was staring into the warm, concerned eyes of a handsome brunette. He couldn't help but admire the man's perfect bone structure, and his eyes held a depth that drew Buck in. It felt unfair for someone to be so effortlessly attractive.

Then the man laughed. The worried frown melting into a smile that made the corners around the man's eyes crinkle. Buck couldn't help but be captivated by the genuine warmth in his eyes. Pretty didn't seem to do him justice. The man let out a breathy laugh again before his expression turned into one of concern. "Maybe you hit your head harder than I thought."

“I’ll do it,” Eddie repeats, looking at Buck in one of those silent conversation ways again, but Buck actually can’t figure out what he’s trying to say this time. It messes with his brain, until Eddie speaks again, “I’ll pretend to only be a little offended none of you have thought to ask me before, but Buck, I’ve fixed a lot of cars. I can look at yours.”

(or, the check engine light comes on in Buck's Jeep, Eddie volunteers to fix it and carpool with him in the meantime, and it all breaks down from there, literally and metaphorically)

“You know the dance to Honky Tonk Badonkadonk?” Eddie asks as Buck wriggles his way behind him to get to the dance floor.

“You know this song?” Buck teases and the rest of their friends laugh at them. Buck sticks his tongue out at them.

“I’m from Texas, I know a lot more than just the song.” Eddie pushes his long-empty glass out in front of him and leans back in his chair, eyes just barely visible under the rim of his ridiculous hat. There’s something in his gaze that makes Buck pause, something like a challenge. Buck has always loved a challenge.

“It’s just that—I died,” Buck continues, voice unsteady enough that Eddie wonders if this is the first time he’s acknowledged that out loud. “I died, and there’s so much more. There’s so much more I want to do, things I don’t even know I want to do yet, and I almost had the chance to have and live them taken away. I don’t want to die and regret missing out on everything else, Eddie.”

“So let’s make a list,” Eddie says. “Let’s do them.”

or, a bucket list that’s really about buck needing to make a change and an eddie who’s ready to do anything to see him fall in love with life again. it takes some crossing off for eddie to realise—the thing at the top of the list in his own heart? it’s been right here all along
