In one of her more hazy memories, there had been a boy. Olivia doesn’t really remember any of her classmates, just knows that this boy turned up one day and threw her world off axis. Only, she can’t picture his face or recall the sound of his voice, isn’t entirely sure she hasn’t made him up.
It feels like a dream, this memory, like something she must have imagined in order to cope. And no matter what Olivia does, no matter how hard she tries, or how many sleepless nights she spends poring over the list of former classmates, she can’t conjure up a solid image in her brain.

It’s cold in here. An unbearable cold he feels deep in his bones, and Josh briefly wishes he’d had the foresight to put on some more layers, or even grab a thicker coat. But that had been the last thing on his mind as his super had ushered him out of his apartment and thrown him into the back of a taxi. He’d barely remembered to grab his keys and wallet.
His apartment had been cold too, come to think of it. Freezing, actually. He just doesn’t remember if the cold had already been seeping in before he’d put his hand through the window.

Leah deserved a father who wouldn’t be absolutely miserable on his daughter’s birthday every year. Of course, he’d love to think that her birth could erase all of the negative feelings he’s ever had toward this day, that it could make all of the anxiety and trauma melt away. But if he couldn’t pull it together on the day she was born, the day she came into the world, what evidence does he have to support the idea that next year will be better? Or the year after that?

He already knows the answer to the question, having done a scan of the plot synopsis so he could prepare himself for what’s to come. Still, he prefers to let his daughters explain things to him, both because it builds their confidence and because he’s in awe of the way their little minds work.
“They're sisters, like us,” Olivia explains.
