“I’m saying that queer women have a special affinity for it,” Lena repeats, fishing the cherry out of the bottom of her drink. “The whole ‘falling for your straight best friend’ is basically a rite of passage.”
“Says who?”
“Everyone.” She puts the cherry in her mouth, bites it off the stem. “The L Word was like, built on the premise that a friend group of queer woman in LA dated each other in some sort of terrible repeating circle for, god, however many seasons that went on. And it’s been my experience that when two people are attracted to each other, and they’re close, feelings are likely to develop.”
“That’s just, I mean, come on.” Kara’s cheeks are a little pink. “A trope and a tv show? That’s your evidence?”
“So you’ve never been in love with your best friend?” Lena looks down at her empty glass.
“No!” Kara sounds affronted. “No, I have never been in love with my best friend.”

Lena cranes her neck away from the TV to stare up at Kara, thumbs stalling on the buttons. “Hey, that’s my—what are you doing?”
Kara presents the ring before her. “Lena Luthor,” she starts. “You’ve been the love of my life for almost as long as I can remember and my best friend for even longer. And I would be… beyond happy to spend every moment of the rest of our lives together. Marry me?”

Lena opens her mouth, then closes it again. She looks down at her glass, swirls the scotch around a few times. “Oh,” she finally manages, her voice faint. “That’s—that’s great, Kara.”
“And then I told him that I couldn’t go out with him anymore.” She’s already looking at Lena when Lena’s head snaps back up, her eyes going round as they meet Kara’s. “Because you can’t date someone when you’re in love with someone else.”

“We’ll find some headphones,” Dustin says helpfully as Steve takes Robin by the hand and leads her up the stairs. She hadn’t expected “going to get air” as a group activity, but now, Steve and her are making a swift exit and Nancy is just staring at the two, mouth gaped slightly, eyes big and wide.
Robin forces herself to look away, to look forward, and allow herself to be led out and ignore the swirling in her chest.

She remembered seeing the girl around once or twice, playing clarinet in the school band or smoking cigarettes on the steps of the school with the drama nerds who wore too much eye-liner and had ugly chipped black nail polish. She was someone who she would crinkle her nose at as she entered Hawkins High every morning, someone Barb would’ve probably said, “just give them a chance, and they’ll surprise you" about. But mostly, Robin was someone who Nancy would never normally give a second thought about.

She found herself outside that dark wooden door again, just like all the other dozens of times she’d come here, except then her stomach had been tied into nervous knots for a different reason. It had been weeks since they’d defeated Reign, and Kara hadn’t seen Lena since then. Well, not since she’d seen her at the hospital, her tearstained face pale and angry as she sat beside Sam, who was unconscious and hooked up to machines, the wires snaking out from under the thin hospital gown. Lena had taken one look at Kara, still wearing her Supergirl suit and covered in the blood of their friend in the bed, and had told her to get out. Kara hadn’t even had the chance to explain herself, she’d just been confronted with anger and harsh words that had made her flinch as if she’d been slapped in the face by each of them. She’d tried reasoning with Lena, but she’d just broke down crying and told Kara to leave, and defeated, Kara had gone, her cape swishing around her as she walked outside, fighting back tears as she walked through the front doors and took off into the night. That had been the last time they’d seen each other.

“Wait, when you say ‘you’ll be teaching’, you mean…both of us?” Kara asks, sounding more than a little apprehensive. “Lena and I will be teaching it together?”
Lena’s own apprehension is so high that she’s fairly sure she’s seconds away from hyperventilation, but she’s surprising even herself with how well she’s hiding it.
“Astute observation, Miss Danvers. It’s clear to anyone in the room that you two have…magnetism.” Cat sounds matter-of-fact, but the casual way she states that other people - both students and coworkers - have noticed how she and Kara interact makes Lena want to sink into the floor and disappear.

Kara and Lena are teachers, thirst is abundant, and communication is hard.
