After losing her powers, her father, and most of her close friends in one fell swoop, El needs an outlet. She also needs to learn how to read and write and speak. Basic life skills. She desperately needs her friends. She needs to learn how to stand up for herself.
Honestly, El needs a lot of things.
What she finds, instead, is a snarky, sullen boy. Ambitious, and uncaring of others’ opinions. He doesn’t really teach her any of those things.
He does teach her how to throw a punch.

“Mike... What are you doing here? Are you okay?”
Mike’s lips rested against Will’s head, brushing against his hair gently. His arms clung to Will’s sides as he started to tremble. The way his hands felt against Will’s body felt foreign after so long apart. It was so odd to think they hadn’t seen each other in over a year.
“It’s– It’s my dad. He’s dead, Will. He’s gone.”
“I’m so sorry,” Will said as they pulled apart slightly, glancing up to study Mike’s face. “What happened?”
“It was a heart attack. I just thought I should tell you in person, you know. Since I’m not sure you’d get a letter if I sent it, anyway. Plus, I just wanted to see your face again. It’s been so long. Too long.”

Will understood what he was talking about, but it didn't make him back off.
“What the hell would you lose control Mike?” Will asked furious too. “You will have everything”.Mike came at him, pushing him against the basement wall, his hands positioned on the wall, surrounding Will's face, trapping him.
“Don’t you get Will?” his voice was a whisper again. “Without you I had nothing”.
