“How are you?” Pike asks. He’s watching Ilya with an intensity that Ilya dislikes immensely. “Shane hasn’t said much.”
Ilya smiles with his teeth. “Do you want details of what we did last night?” He’d put Hollander on his knees and twisted his hands in that fine, slick hair while Hollander moaned his approval.
“Jesus Christ.” Hollander looks like he wants to put his face to the cold marble of the counter. “He’s asking how you’re settling in Montreal, you asshole. You don’t need to make everything a competition.”
“Montreal is fine,” Ilya says. “Is cold. Has shit hockey team. Cannot help that.”
The timer dings. Ilya pulls the golubtsi out of the oven. There are two trays; he hadn’t accounted for how much the recipe would make. They don’t smell quite right, but it’s close enough to pull the string of nostalgia in his chest.
“I made food,” he says, trying to hide the swell of pride.
“Ilya Rozanov. Housewife.” Pike’s being mean about it, but Ilya doesn’t care. His opinion does not matter here.
“It needs to sit. To cool.” He pulls a pair of plates from a cupboard and sets them on the counter. “Is good. You will like, I think.”
Hollander is frowning at him, that little line between his eyebrows. “I’ve got dinner. From the nutritionist.”
“This is good,” Ilya says, helpless. “Cabbage.”
“It smells good,” Pike offers, and there’s a new expression on his face that Ilya never wants to see again. Pike is looking at him with open pity. Pity for being stuck here, in this place, with Hollander who will not break his diet plan to eat the golubtsi that Ilya made for him.
Ilya’s chest is too tight. “Eat if you want,” he says, forcing the casual tone. There are so many. He’s going to be eating them for days, until he’s choking down cabbage out of spite. He grabs his coat and his cigarettes and goes to find space for himself in the cold.
