Shane Hollander: Captain of the Montreal Metros.

Bookmarker's Notes
But Hayden listens, and Hayden knows how to feel out a group. The guys like Hayden, as far as Shane can tell. He’s kind of soft but no one really makes fun of him for it, not the way Shane can feel them all looking at him because they know he’s got something to hide. Hayden doesn’t give a shit that half the guys on their team laugh in his face when he says he’s calling an early night to call Jackie, because the next night the guys still invite him out again and rib him and listen when he says, so nice it doesn’t even sting, that maybe Beaulier and Berkes could run some extra turning drills at the next practice. That’s the kind of ease in the room Shane needs.
Theriault knows it too. That’s why he’ll say yes. He’ll look Shane right in the eyes and tell him Pike’s a good pick because he’s got the right vibe. And the way he’ll say it will tell Shane the truth, which is that it’s a failure of Shane’s leadership that they’re picking an alternate captain based on vibes and not hockey. Before the game yesterday Theriault had told him to look out for who was a good leader. He’d said, you have the hockey handled, Hollander, so find someone who can manage a room. The criticism landed like a whip.

"I shouldn't be playing forward; I should be here, in the centre."
Jamie may be thriving in his new role on the pitch, but that doesn't mean he won't have a slight identity crisis when some things are pointed out to him.

“Yer but,” Shoresy says it while fidgeting in his seat, his energy wild. “But what if I don’t want to? Huh? What are yer gonna do then?’
Goody laughs, and it doesn’t feel quite right. And despite himself, despite the fact he might be suspended for his behaviour on the rink tonight, or the fact that the team might fold, or that he feels a cold sense of dread run down his back at the cold angry energy that’s coming off Goody right now, Shoresy gets a tiny bit excited.
“Well then, I’ll just have to settle yer down.”

Bookmarker's Notes
Hours later, when Wayne steps outside for a smoke, Daryl drifts after him. The night is starting to stretch out, maybe a little longer than it should be, maybe not. But Dary’s energy is starting to fade and he can’t think of anything better than pressing his shoulder against Wayne’s as they enjoy the quiet of the night.
There’s a light in the sky. It’s not the moon, but it hovers over their town. Sometimes over McMurray’s place, sometimes over Wayne’s, but never over the schools or the hockey rink. Tonight it’s hanging over Modean’s, their own personal star. It pulses and wavers casting stark light across the parking lot just beyond where Wayne is hunched in the shadow of the building. His cigarette burns orange at the end, the only point of light, and smoke drifts lazily out of the darkness.

Summary
“Am I a bad friend?”
Hayden has always been the guy Shane joked with, the guy he trusted to feed him without mocking him, the guy he roomed with on the road, and Shane is the only man who has ever seen Hayden cry, and Hayden loves Shane. He fucking loves him. They are like brothers, and they have been for almost ten fucking years. He’s always been Shane’s guy, Shane’s best friend.
Except all along, maybe that wasn’t true. Ilya Rozanov, apparently, had been the guy. Before Hayden had ever met Shane, Ilya Rozanov had been there. And Hayden had never even noticed.
Shane is all over every inch of Hayden’s life. Hayden thought that was reciprocal.

Shane taught his daughter how to tie her shoes. Hayden didn’t notice the sadness Shane carried with him for years until he saw him with Ilya Rozanov and saw a smile on his face that Hayden had never seen before.
“All good?” Shane asks again.
“Yeah,” Hayden says. “Just tired.”

“The glasses! I heard that too.” Shit, it must be a fetish, right? She doesn’t just happen to be old. Rozy likes that she’s old.
Or: Cliff figures out why Ilya’s keeping his Montreal girl a secret. She’s not a girl at all...she's an elderly woman. Or maybe an elderly man?

Bookmarker's Notes
It surprises Daryl again, how intuitive Wayne is. How much he really sees.
They lay together then, no words passing between them, and it’s nice, really, to let the moment stretch between them, extending further and further away.
“Wayne.” Daryl says, breaking the silence. “You ever think about leaving Letterkenny?” He assumes the non-sequitur won’t give Wayne any problems, and it doesn’t.
“Think I’d sooner take up meth,” Wayne says without hesitating.
“Think it’s nice.” Daryl says, after a moment. “Being so certain about where you belong.”
Waits a second before adding, “I didn’t always know.”
Wayne sniffs at him, nose in his hair as he responds dryly, “Fuckin’ 10 ply, aren’t you?”
“Well, I’m in good company then, aren’t I?” Daryl slides a hand onto Wayne’s waist and Wayne makes the sweetest, deepest sound Daryl has ever heard a person make.

Bookmarker's Notes
Darry turns around and climbs down out of the loft. “Lunch?” he says. What he means is Chef Boyardee heated up everywhere but the middle in the microwave. Wayne knows that’s what he means. He looks unimpressed.“Hard pass,” he says. His eyes do this thing, real quick, a back and forth over Darry’s chest, down to his waist, back up. It’s subtle. Darry sees it.
“Wayne,” he says.
“What.”
Darry steps in close to him. “Shut your eyes.”
Wayne stares at him. He’s breathing hard. He shuts his eyes.
Darry shuts his.
It’s alright. No one’s looking.
