He focused on Amy, spotting her face pinched in concern next to Holt’s stoic one. She was breathing deeply, too deep, obviously trying to get Jake to match her. Something to focus on.
This was fine. He’d done this plenty of times. He was John McClane, walking barefoot on the broken glass. Just a little torture for the greater good.
“Detective?” Kim, the prosecutor, brought him back to reality. Jake would want her on his team, if he was that kid in the other room. Calm, serious, dedicated. A true professional. Someone who would fight for you.

Summary
When Jake comes home from Shaw's Bar, tired and hurt and resigned to the fact that Roger Peralta may in fact be a terrible father, he finds none other than the man himself, determined to make a change.
Jake's not an idiot. But actions speak louder than words and Roger seems to really, truly mean it this time.
And it's not like he has a choice, actually, because Roger forced himself into Jake's apartment and doesn't seem to be leaving anytime soon. So it's kind of bullshit that Gina's mad at him when Jake hasn't done anything wrong.

The man’s tone was forcibly gentle, like coaxing a stray, and Peter would scoff but this had nothing to do with him. Tony wasn’t talking to him. Peter wasn’t here. Peter had died next to Toomes, or under the warehouse, or at Homecoming. Because if he was here, and all of this was really happening to him, then he’d be angry or sad or at least he'd feel something, but he was just numb.
