It’s so quiet in the war room that you could hear a pin drop. Not a single person dares to say a word - not even the favored princes - and all eyes remain fixed on the head of the table, where a large figure sits hunched over in its chair, clutching the latest newsreel between two massive fists.
Having been forewarned of some of the contents of said newsreel, Sanji does his best to keep anything from showing on his face, to maintain his expression in an implacable facade. He thinks he largely succeeds in controlling himself outwardly, but inwardly his gut is churning with emotion.
The newsreel twitches, and the five people not holding the paper sit up a little straighter in their seats, each of them bracing for impact without actually meaning to as slowly, oh so slowly, the paper is lowered down until it’s resting flat on the table.
“Well,” Judge says, his mouth working like he wants to spit. “This is certainly an … unexpected development.”

Summary
It’s raining, he realizes, drops spattering the windows and drumming on the roof. Nicky’s breathing is steady and calm, hands unhesitating as he seeks out the knots in Joe’s muscles and defrays them with perfectly applied pressure, using skill and knowledge gained over hundreds of years of doing this.
Nicky has never seen the need to fill silence with words. It was something that took Joe a while to adjust to, Nicky’s way of communicating without speaking. The quirk of his lips, the twitch of an eyebrow, the smallest motion of his head, it’s all said far more for Nicky than words ever could.
So it’s something of a surprise when he starts talking.

There’s a long pause. “Oh,” Joe says.
He hasn’t hung up, which is what Nicky was expecting, so he uses the silence to start apologizing.
In which both Joe and Nicky struggle to fit into a world where your cycle determines so much about your romantic prospects when neither of them have typical cycles or even know if they want that kind of romantic relationship. In which Joe co-runs a center where people with atypical heat and rut cycles can come and receive the help they need. In which Nicky really wishes he hadn't written a series of very stupid letters to the editor of the local paper back when he was pretending he didn't need the kind of help Joe was offering.
