    You don’t know how to believe this. You know, logically, that you don’t usually feel so useless, so out of place, so shattered. There must be a reason for that, but it’s hard to find when you’re feeling like this.

    The way Adrian and Bruce are talking to you, though— The things they’re saying— They’re difficult not to believe. Your mind is insisting one thing, but your heart is agreeing with them, viciously, clinging to every word of love and kindness that comes from them to you. You want to believe them so badly.

    Your eyes burn again, and you bury your face in Adrian’s chest. Your voice breaks apart when you tell them, “I’m so sorry,” and start to cry in earnest.
