Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.
In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.

Shane barely heard any of it. His father hugged him first. Then Yuna. “Sweetheart,” she whispered against his ear, “you don’t look well. I don’t think you should be going up there alone..”
He couldn’t answer. He stood carefully. Ignoring the concerned look both of his parents threw his way.
The pressure between his hips was unbearable now. Every step toward the stage felt wrong. Painful. Wet. Why was it wet?
Or Shane goes into labor at the NHL awards with a son they didn’t even know existed.

He knows Shane wants to get it right, to be as perfect at Russian as he is at everything else. He had asked Ilya to correct his mistakes so he could learn, but Ilya hates seeing him be so tough on himself when he’s been doing so well. And, if he’s being honest, some part of him doesn’t want Shane to be perfect because this clumsy fundamental Russian sounds so much like love. Effort. Devotion. He loves Shane’s bad Russian. It’s very, very cute. So, sometimes, he lets things slide.
Also, he really can’t explain any of the rules.

A burst of confetti rained down over his head, sudden and bright, like a miniature snowstorm exploding out of nowhere. Shane instinctively ducked, shoulders hunching as the pieces caught in his hair, his helmet, his shoulders.
Laughter broke out.
And then they were there.
All of them.
Voyageurs players closed in from every direction, forming a loose, uneven circle that tightened fast, until Shane was right in the middle of it. Gloves thudded against pads. Someone’s arm hooked around his neck. Someone else smacked the back of his helmet.
“Capitaine.”
JJ’s voice again, somewhere inside the pile. Lower than usual, but clear.
“If we had to choose again,” he said, “we’d still pick you.”
