Summary
No one held a bigger piece of his heart than Erwin Smith. Levi might as well have given him the entire thing.
There was nothing Levi could say to make him stay behind, to keep him safe and alive so Levi could come home to him at the end of the day. Erwin was a stubborn man of his own mind—no one and nothing could ever hope to sway his convictions. And it seemed Erwin was resolved to kill himself and take Levi’s heart with him.
Levi had a choice here: ignore Erwin for the evening and have their last private moment together be a bitter argument, or go to him and spend one last night with him. It wasn’t a difficult decision.

Levi and Erwin say goodbye on the night before the return to Shiganshina and yearn for what could have been.

“Answer my fucking question,” Levi demands, voice raw. “Do you want me now?”
“Levi,” it’s a sigh, a mere exhalation of breath that happens to form the other man’s name. Levi— Levi looks furious, desperate, wanting, and devastated all at once, so many emotions warring on that normally expressionless face. “You know the answer.”
“Coward.” It’s almost too soft to be called an accusation, too sweet as Levi leans in, brushing his lips over Erwin’s neck. They’re soft, wet as he kisses Erwin’s neck tenderly, still while saying those words. “You’re a fucking coward, Captain.”
