Summary
Eric Foreman was consistent. It's something he prided himself in. He consistently ate the same things, avoided eye contact, avoided talking. He consistently got good grades on all of his tests, was the top of his class; he was a try-hard, in all aspects of the term.
Robert Chase is the definition of inconsistency. He procrastinates, his room is a wasteland, his thoughts are scattered; by all accounts, he shouldn't be the top of his class. But he was.
The two polar-opposites meet in a dorm at John Hopkins School of Medicine. But as the years go on, med school starts to take a serious toll on Chase. Will his new friend Foreman be able to help him through it, or will he succumb to the ever-present, all-consuming pull of death?

Mike Wheeler has a lot of internalized homophobia. He drinks a lot to try and cope with his self hatred and constant thoughts of suicide, but no matter how much he drinks, he can't escape his love for Will.
