Chu Wanning is just passing through the main courtyard when a group of female junior disciples approaches from the opposite way, huddled close together under two umbrellas, talking in animated voices that carry across the space.
“Have you seen him?” the tallest of them says. She is one of Xuanji’s disciples, but Chu Wanning cannot recall her name. “Da-shixiong says he’d been away for a while, but now he’s back for good.”
Five years after the opening of the Heavenly Rift, Mo Ran returns to Sisheng Peak. Soon later, Chu Wanning begins to be plagued by strange dreams.

Summary
Mo Ran senses it before he sees it. As if through a fog, he watches Chu Wanning reach out and pull the chest lid open. “Shizun, no!” he calls out, but it is too late. There is a flash of light and a burst of powder that explodes straight into Chu Wanning’s face. “Wanning!” Mo Ran is with him between one breath and another, kneeling next to him, hands roaming Chu Wanning’s body, checking for injuries. “Wanning, Wanning, please…” he repeats, bracing himself for something horrible to happen.
Instead, Chu Wanning sneezes, coughs into the crook of his elbow and rubs at his eyes, where the dust must have gotten under his eyelids. Other than that, he appears to be unharmed.
Following the rumor that Xu Shuanglin has been seen in a small mountain village to the south, Mo Ran and Chu Wanning are sent to investigate. What they find there leaves them with more questions than answers, but it also brings them a better understanding of themselves and each other as they navigate their new relationship.
