“Jay was cleared from the hospital a week before Christmas, and of course there was something new to worry about. In the hospital, Tim warned him that a snowstorm was coming, almost unheard of for Alabama, and that it’d probably stick around for a while. Jay had given him a crooked smile, reminding Tim that they’d survived worse. Tim didn't like that joke very much. But Jay was right, all they needed was a place to lay low and wait out the storm.”

After Jay is cleared from the hospital, they wait out a snowstorm in a shitty motel. Jay struggles with guilt, boredom, and his crush on Tim.

Tim stepped aside and looked up from his friends back, and then froze.
Looking in the mirror, Tim's reflection stared horrified, eyes wide and his face draining its color. In the corner of his eye, Jay shared his expression. He stared at the mirror, and then to Jay, and then back to the mirror.
Jay had no reflection.”
