Penelope had been so frightened, felt so guilty; she still sees that memory in her nightmares, sometimes.
Of late, those nightmares have returned with a vengeance, but now it is she who lies there, pale and blue-lipped and utterly hopeless.
An Epilogue: Eyes narrowing thoughtfully, Colin examines her face. “Darling, surely you can’t be missing Eloise already. We haven’t even left the wedding.”
He’s gotten the missing part right, she supposes. The Portuguese, she remembers him telling her once, during their brief trip to the Iberian Peninsula, call this particular sort of nostalgia saudade. A longing for something that might never even have happened – in her case, a different beginning to their marriage.
