Vash isn't human. There's so much to him that is too much, too different, too weird to be comfortable around people. Humanoid, not human. Slowly, he starts to let Wolfwood see what that means. 5 times Vash showed Wolfwood the ways he wasn't human and 1 time Wolfwood made Vash realize that didn't matter.
Or, Vash is subjected to the mortifying ordeal of being known.

Vash calls it home.
Wolfwood calls it a wreck in the middle of the desert, one he can’t wait to get the hell away from. Too clean, too kind, too comfortable. It makes him feel like something that crawled out of the desert on too many legs – grimy and bloodstained and more monstrous than usual. Even Brad is too polite to say it to his face, but Wolfwood is sure they don’t want him there. (Who would?)
Wolfwood isn’t used to nice things, but Vash shows him how to appreciate them. Set during an extended stay on Ship 3, which Wolfwood can’t stand.

"Every place in the world where somebody's outlawed the fun stuff, somebody else will be selling it in a back alley. I'm gonna go outside and have a smoke, and I will bet you a blowjob that I'll be back in twenty minutes loaded for bear."
"I'll take that bet." Vash said as Wolfwood closed the door behind him, before adding to himself and the empty room, "...but only because I was planning to do it anyway."
