Summary
The guy cracks a smile, his teeth a little crooked. “You have the weary, beaten down look that all grad students have.”
Robby chuckles. He’s not wrong. It’s the same thought that crosses his own mind every time he spares himself a look in the mirror. He says, “I’m only a MS1. I’m sure I’ll look like a zombie by the time I graduate.”
A groan. “Don’t tell me that shit, man,” the guy grumbles. “I’m premed.”
“Oh, never mind, then. Med school is a great and wonderful time. I don’t hate my life at all.”
“Liar.” The guy grins, his face brightening.

Summary
Throwing his head back and laughing, Robby shifted closer, ignoring Jack’s stiff body langauge, to wrap his arms around him. He pressed a kiss to Jack’s jaw. “I’ll miss you,” he mumbled, pressing another kiss to his cheek. “So much. I’ll pine for you. I’ll cry myself to sleep every night, hugging your pillow.”
A pause, then Jack grumbled, “That’s a start.”

Jack goes out of town for a few days. Robby goes on an emotional rollercoaster.

Summary
Jack had just stepped back onto the main floor when he clocked movement at the ambulance entrance, two guys hurrying in, the smaller one helping a guy with a sweatshirt covered in blood. But something was wrong, some unnamable instinct rising within Jack at the way they moved. It was too fluid, too controlled. Jack knew what the walking wounded looked like, had seen it for years, from war zones to bar fights. This wasn't the injured seeking help; this was men hunting.
Time slowed, Jack's heart rate spiking, the adrenaline dump casting everything in sharp relief—the full ED floor, patients plus shift change meaning twice the usual personnel were here.
Robby was here.
That thought got him moving, Jack approaching laterally. He got there right as the guns came out.

Summary
"You tell him to take the lonely new guy out, you tell me to take the lonely workaholic out, so neither of us can refuse because we're doing it for someone else. A perfect snare."
Adamson's expression warmed even further, like he was fighting off a smile, a battle he didn't mind losing. "What a way to look at it."
Jack grinned at the non-denial denial. "Sure, Dr. Adamson. I'll show your protégé a good time."

Summary
"So hot," the other woman agreed, shooting a quick glance out at Jack. "Those arms. Have mercy."
Robby hid a smile. Jack was gonna love hearing about this.
Her friend made an agreeing sort of noise. "Yeah, but I'm gonna be so real with you: the leg kinda freaks me out."
And Robby froze, a ripple of offense sweeping him.

Summary
“I know it’s hard. It’s so hard, I know, I’m sorry,” Jack tells him, soaping the inside bend of his knee, making sure not to miss a single bit of him. “I’m so sorry. But I’ve got you.”
Robby’s eyes flutter back open, tears clumping his lashes together. Jack sets the sponge aside for a moment, rinsing his hands so he can take Robby’s face between his palms, sweeping his thumbs beneath his eyes. He clears away his tears, leans in, presses a kiss so softly to his downturned mouth, his wet-sparkling beard.
“I love you,” Jack promises him, their lips brushing as he speaks. “I love you, I love you. You’re going to be okay.”
