It’s the late nineties, summer in suburbia, and Hermione Granger is not as alone as she thinks she is.
The man was there, just like this: a small smile, hands behind his back, and the slightest tilt of his head while black eyes surveyed her, down and up, and then down a little, again, to somewhere below her chin. They seemed a separate being, the eyes of this man; a thing unto themself, floating in the white expanse of a head, cradled gently, softly, in the sockets of a skull. It was as if he were merely an amalgamation of spare parts, a hoarding of inorganic materials made to look real. Not something complete. Fragmented, but what was missing she couldn't guess at.

And then Doctor Riddle arrives, and it's so strange, but time ticks. It doesn't matter if she wants it to. In fact, it doesn't matter what she wants at all.
