Over a decade into his capture, Dream’s thoughts torture him as he longs for freedom from the cruel prison he has been trapped in. The death of Roderick Burgess brings unexpected promise and danger, however, as Hob Gadling is summoned to the funeral and finds himself catching the attention of a mysterious figure in dark glasses, unaware of his friend's captivity or the danger the nightmare poses. But when a chance conversation overheard in a nearby tavern leads Hob to fear the worst, the Corinthian makes him a suspicious offer regarding the being below Fawney Rig, dragging him into a deadly plot that means to break Dream’s spirit and accomplish what Burgess could not. Naturally, things do not go to plan, and the healing in the aftermath is not something they can accomplish alone.

When Morse is abducted and found half dead nearly two weeks later the suspicions go to Oxford’s most recent serial killer- only, he’s supposed to have already been caught. Faced with their failure, it’s up to CID to find the real killer, but with only Morse’s notes, a wrongful conviction, and a missing child to go by it’s beginning to look like Thursday’s bagman may have gotten himself tangled up in a mystery only he was able to solve.
