He'd always been a pretty boy. Pretty and slight and mischievous, a soft dusting of freckles and a strange, angular face; all pointed jaw and sharp grin, cheekbones and bare shoulders. Jinbei remembers meeting Whitebeard's eyes over the lad's head, once, the look of mutual understanding that had passed between them. Compelling, isn’t he? that look seemed to say. But if you lay a finger on my youngest, Jinbei, I won't be held responsible for my actions.

She pushes it across the table, happily, to offer Amane a sip which he accepts from Nene’s own straw; happily, she takes it back. Happily is the state in which Nene will do everything she ever does in all the rest of her life.

“Because I’m really scared of you,” Mitsuba says instantly. Sometimes in her imagination she knows all the right things to say to Tsukasa, all the fearless and witty responses she could make, all the impressive and interesting remarks that would show her to Tsukasa in a brand new light and advance their friendship to a brand new level, closer and stronger and more equal than ever before. But that’ll never happen in reality. It’s impossible: Mitsuba can’t pick and choose her words around Tsukasa, because around Tsukasa her terror overrides all conscious thought. “So you can trust me, you should trust me, because – I won’t do anything wrong. I wouldn’t ever lie! Or, or be bad! Because I don’t want to make you angry, because – I’m scared of what you’d do to me if I, if... if I ever—But I wouldn’t! Tsukasa-san, I wouldn’t ever!”
