Summary
Phil’s been dead for three years when Clint sees him, the very real and alive him, in the middle of New York during an Avengers battle. Then Clint gets shot, because it turns out that staring blankly at a supposedly dead ex-handler you were (are?) in love with is not a solid field strategy.
No one knew what Clint and Phil were to each other before the Battle of New York. As it turns out, ‘no one’ included the two of them. This is where bottling your feelings gets you.
(Or, the one where Phil’s secret gets blown wide open, the past is dredged up, and Kate has to be the bearer of brutal honesty. Again.)

“Oh, gods forbid they respond positively to you doing a good thing,” Neve deadpans. She squeezes him a little again. “That’s sort of how it works, Astarion.”
She can’t even see it. Believes the best of them all so earnestly, himself included, that she can’t see how it would all fall away without her at the center. It’s enough to make a person feel like they might actually deserve it.
“And by it, you mean…?” he asks instead.
Her huffed laugh of disbelief ruffles the hair at his neck. “Friendship, you idiot,” she answers. “And the general acquisition thereof.”
Astarion cuts a sideways look at her as best he can with her still nestled so close. “And is that what we are? Friends?”
He’d meant it to tease her, and yet finds that the silence before her answer twists his stomach. Because…he doesn’t actually know, either.
“Yes, Astarion,” Neve says gently, after a moment. “I think we’re very good friends.”

It’s happened before: Jaskier cursed by a past lover to experience for himself the ache of unrequited love. Once, memorably, for a donkey, who was impervious to all the bard’s serenades and compliments, and shat on his favourite pair of boots. The irony of today’s particular curse is that Jaskier’s ‘love’ isn’t actually unrequited. Presumably, though, Lady Freckletits and her sister thought it would be funny to see Jaskier scorned and rejected by the stoic, emotionless witcher he insists on following around.
