Summary
Eddie is working hard on figuring himself out, getting a life, and also reestablishing contact with Buck after worrying about them drifting apart and their friendship changing. Realizing that sometimes people misunderstand his relationship with Buck should not be the shock it is. Also, if Chris could stop launching verbal sneak attacks on him, he'd appreciate it.
Meanwhile, Buck's learning to parent a toddler while not at all being insecure about something said by one Margaret Buckley. He's just studiously avoiding the word 'Parent' like the plague, and otherwise doing his damn best.
or
If Buck had a nickel for every time someone left him their kid in their will without his knowledge–well, he’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice now.

Summary
Sometimes I take fic prompts on tumblr (filed under my tag, tumblyfic). And sometimes, what my brain ends up spitting out is longer than I'd anticipated.
This series does NOT include all prompt responses, only those above a certain word count, which may vary depending on what I feel like that day. They might differ slightly from their original tumblr post version, as these have been beta read and edited. If you're interested in reading all my prompt responses, the tag on my tumblr (linked above) is the only way to do it, sorry.
All prompts will be listed in the fic summary, so you can tell what they are at a glance.

Summary
“I know I wasn’t a good parent, emotionally. But I wasn’t as bad as him, though, Buck, please - I didn’t drink or hurt either of you -”
Philip’s expression is shocked, like he never considered what responsibility he had for what Maddie went through. It makes Buck feel a familiar roiling anger in his gut.
“No, you just drove her to someone who did!” He stares at his father, furiously. Then, he’s just tired, suddenly. “And I hurt myself for you.”
***
In the wake of the events of Nashville and Buck's detoxing, Philip Buckley sets out to do something that's been harder every year he hasn't done it: actually try to understand his son, and explain how he became the person he was, and maybe gain some calvary in the shadow of his's son's better, now-departed father figure.

Bookmarker's Notes
He doesn’t know what to say. So he just pats his arm awkwardly. Knows it’s not enough. When did it get so broad? When did he become so big? He supposes it’s the long term effects of the job, but in his mind, Evan - Buck - is a dimpled, sweet-faced little boy. He’s also a tall, gangly teenager. All legs and angry, hurt eyes. Now he’s a man in his thirties, all muscles and tattoos and yet, soft knit cardigans and smiles, too. Philip didn’t do that for Buck, he found that balance himself. He should’ve. He didn’t.

Summary
Buck yanks his boxers down and stands there, in Eddie’s room, nakedly.
…What the fuck is he doing?
Is his solution to accidentally catching an eyeful of Eddie’s dick to flash him back?
Stomach swooping, Buck scrambles to pick his briefs back off the floor. At the same moment, the bedroom door cracks open.
He hears Eddie’s sharp inhale, head snapping up in time to watch Eddie scramble for the light switch, plunging them into darkness.
Fantastic. Now they’re staring at each other in the dark. And Buck’s dick is still out.
Alright. Buck can work with this.
“Hey, man,” Buck says, feigning nonchalance.
This is a battlefield. There is no room for modesty.
An incredulous giggle slips past Eddie’s lips. “Were, uh. Were you planning on sleeping naked?”
Or: Buck and Eddie run into each other naked. Several times. For some reason.

Bookmarker's Notes
Buck groans, tipping his head back. This is the most confusing bathroom encounter he’s ever had, he’s sure of it. Except for Michigan, maybe, with the baby moose, and the— but that doesn’t count. That was a wildlife encounter. This is an Eddie encounter. In the bathroom.

Summary
Everyone knows that when you touch someone who's going to be important to you for the first time, you'll leave a mark on them. It's not just romantic love; parents and children, siblings, close friends all share marks too. At least, they do in theory. Maddie's the only person who's ever touched Buck and left anything behind.
.
It’s funny, growing up knowing your parents don’t care about you. The kind of funny that would get Evan uninvited from sleepovers, which is why he always changes into his pajamas in the bathroom. The kind of funny that he’s not allowed to ask his parents about. The kind of funny that makes Maddie look at him so sadly sometimes, when she doesn’t realize he can see her out of the corners of his eyes.- Language:

Eddie blinks. “What?” he says. “Where--?”
“I only have one soulmark,” Buck says, and he doesn’t recognize his own voice when he says it.

Summary
"You cannot murder anyone," says Maddie. "Also, if you were going to murder your captain, it would be very stupid to write murder down as your top idea for how to deal with him."
"It's on a dry erase board!" Chim protests. So far, all he's written on the board is Ways to Deal with Capt Gerrasshole, and then 1. Murder? below it. "And I put a question mark. So even if I didn't erase it, the jury would never convict. A question mark introduces reasonable doubt."
Maddie rolls her eyes with a fond smile. "I assume there would be other evidence."
"I would never be so sloppy."
"Again, this would be more convincing if you hadn't immediately written murder right at the top of your list."

"Did the two of you get married and fail to disclose it?" Gerrard shoots back. "Because unless you did, this isn't his family, and I am under no obligation to release him. Isn't that right, Firefighter Buckley? There isn't a single regulation that requires me to excuse you in the middle of a shift."

Bookmarker's Notes
“Eat this.”
Eddie blinked at it, wondering if he had passed into hallucinations.
The plate had five dusty pink-brown blocks on it. They looked like shiny clay.
“… what is this?” Eddie asked, daring to poke at one of the blocks with the fork Buck planted next to the plate.
Buck bit his lip. “Don’t worry about it. I think it will help.”
