Eddie blinked at it, wondering if he had passed into hallucinations.
The plate had five dusty pink-brown blocks on it. They looked like shiny clay.
“… what is this?” Eddie asked, daring to poke at one of the blocks with the fork Buck planted next to the plate.
Buck bit his lip. “Don’t worry about it. I think it will help.”

Summary
Eddie tries to peek out the windows to see what's out there as he approaches the door, but Buck moves to obstruct his view. "Hey, uh. So. I found … uh, this piece of furniture, on Marketplace. And if you hate it, it's fine. No biggie! I just … it was such a good deal!"
They don't need more furniture. In fact, they actively need less, so Buck wouldn't buy something new without a really good reason.
"Okay, Buck, I trust you. What did you get?"
"It's … I guess, I mean, um. Well, I think you should just come see." Buck turns around before Eddie can reply and heads out the front door.
Eddie stays hot on his heels for barely even one square of sidewalk, stopping in his tracks when he sees the bright red metal frame that's strapped down in Buck's truck bed. It's upright, so Eddie has a clear view of what Buck picked up for them.
It's bunk beds.
Buck and Eddie try to process their grief about Bobby's death and figure out what they mean to each other, all while squeezed into Eddie's two-bedroom house.

Well, I used to have a best friend, Eddie thinks, then pushes the thought away. “I … I have other things. But Chris and the job are definitely the most central right now.”
"You know, you can’t put yourself last all the time, Eddie.” She laughs a little. “Straight from my therapist’s mouth to your ears! Ooh — you know what? I’ve got a great idea.”
“Oh?”
“You should come to book club. It’s something I do with my parent friends. We take turns hosting, and it’s my turn!”
Sometimes the best part about reading is getting to learn more about yourself.

Buck and Eddie make a bet:
- Can Buck prove he’s ready to find a new partner by going one month without sex or orgasms?
- Can Eddie prove he doesn’t want to keep punishing himself by committing to having one orgasm a day?As Buck’s prize if he lasts, Eddie wagers a secret, one he’s only starting to accept: that Buck’s already the half he’s trying to become, to Eddie.
As for Eddie, despite the prize he requests, the real reward might be learning to let go of the protective shell he’s built over a lifetime, a rather terrifying prospect.

“Nope.” Eddie runs a hand through his hair. Shakes it out. Angles his shoulders away from Buck; he doesn’t want the guy thinking Eddie’s not available. This whole time he’s kept his eyes locked on the man, the man looking back, and it’s only when the guy’s head tilts to one side that Eddie breaks the contact. He purses his lips to stop his satisfied smile.
Waits.
“Eddie,” Buck chastises, “don’t you think you should—”
“Shhh,” Ravi interrupts, catching Eddie’s strategy before Buck and just as soon hustling a reluctant Buck away from their table. “Shut up, shut up. Oh my god. How could I have ever thought Eddie didn’t have game? Fuck. I gotta take notes …”
