Something scratched against the glass. Jeyne startled, heart pounding, but there was nothing outside but a bare branch, blown into the window by the wind. She didn’t think there had been glass in the windows when she looked from the outside, but that could have just as well have been a trick of the light.
Lights flickered out of the corner of her eye. She could hear music, very faintly, sounding as though it was coming from outside, from the back of the house. But that was impossible. There was nobody here, except for her.

Without looking away from the screen, Shane replies, "You can survive a few hours without me entertaining you."
"I will not," Ilya grumbles. "I will die, and then charity won't even happen because I will be dead. You will wish you had not read these documents, Hollander, after I am gone."
Or; Shane is trying to get some reading done. Ilya is left to entertain himself.

He pointed to the carpet between his spread legs. “Sit."
Ilya sat as if a leash was wrapped around his throat. Sometimes, he felt like a tamed animal. Like Shane's dog. The great Ilya Rozanov at this man's feet, domesticated. He nuzzled into his warm thigh and wondered if Shane was aware of what he was doing. If it was obvious how Ilya felt, or if Shane just knew him so well that he was acting on instinct with no thought.
He wondered if Shane would think it's ridiculous, too.

“Yeah.”
Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.”
Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?”
Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?”
Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?”
Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.”
“Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.”
Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.
