The silence that follows is unbearable.
Then the answer comes - quiet, steady.
"I'm on my way."
Essek begins counting.
Not seconds. He is not that optimistic.
Heartbeats.
If there is no arrival by sixty, he will tear open space and bring the healer here himself.
Essek watches Caleb’s chest rise and fall and feels the night expand around them, vast and patient.
This is not the vigil he prepared.
This is something else.On the longest night of the year, Essek plans a quiet surprise: a Zemni Long Night Vigil, researched and arranged down to the last candlewick. Caleb comes home late, as he always does - just not under his own power.
With an artifact’s hungry remnants still tangled in Caleb’s magic, healing becomes dangerous, and the only thing left to do is keep watch until morning.

The Elite Four leave without a word, only glaring in Beau’s direction, until only Yasha is left in front of the group.
“I guess I will be seeing you soon.” she comments, and her voice doesn’t betray any emotion.
“You can bet on it.” Beau mutters in response. Beautiful or not, gentle spirited or not, Yasha is her enemy.or

Sometimes Beau can't believe Yasha is really back. For the first time since the Mighty Nein destroyed Obann and welcomed a scared, repentant Yasha back into their ranks, Beau allows herself to reflect on those feelings she has buried deep inside herself - feelings that won't stay buried much longer.

Okay it's like 2am but I couldn't stop thinking about this and wrote it all in one go, so if it's messy, I'm sorry. There was no filter or anything, just pure emotion and need to write this. It just wouldn't let me sleep, and apparently, it wouldn't let Kingsley sleep, either.
Kingsley has another "empty night," where he wakes up disoriented, confused, and afraid. Thankfully, he's got a pair with him that are well versed in handling bad dreams.
