Summary
Izzy had unexpectedly struck up a connection with someone from the town’s book lovers’ chat. Meanwhile, newcomer Stede had already found himself a boyfriend while also bonding with a mysterious online friend. Neither realized they’re talking to each other. Izzy would never give Stede a chance in real life. He made it a rule to dislike all of Ed’s boyfriends on principle.

“We should light some candles. It’s getting dark in here.” Stede suggests, voice barely above a whisper.
Ed looks between them, Stede and Izzy, and then down at their clasped hands. Eventually, his gaze lands on Izzy’s face, and he’s more vulnerable than Izzy’s seen him since – since Hornigold.
“Are you staying, Iz?” Ed asks, eyes wide and glistening in the low light.
Izzy freezes, looking from Stede to Ed and back again as panic ripples under the surface of his skin, tight and electric and it’s too much. They’ve done it before but never like this, quiet and intimate, and it feels different in ways Izzy isn’t sure he can process yet.
When Stede’s fingers brush his wrist, Izzy jolts, eyes snapping up to meet Stede’s gaze. He’s smiling, soft and slow, looking at Izzy with that peculiar fondness of his. Stede raises his brows and Izzy knows what he’s asking – what he wants. Swallowing thickly, Izzy nods, and Stede’s touch alights from his skin as he turns to face Ed.
“He’s staying.”

Izzy never called it macabre. Never said chin up, mate, this’ll pass. Never told Edward to think of something nice instead or promised him that things would look better tomorrow. He just stayed close: a steady, solid weight. And when Edward couldn’t speak, couldn’t move, couldn’t do much of anything at all, Izzy read.
