This is the closest to canon Wei Wuxian I've encountered in fic. This is also an excellent Lan Wangji, and a logical extrapolation of the development of their relationship from canon. The plot is that perfect blend of casefic and character and relationship development, and the OCs and side characters are all well-written and well-utilized. One of my favorites.

I think a post-canon take where Lan Wangji despairs of having not gone with Wei Wuxian + chief cultivator duties leading to him being destabilized emotional. Someone in the kitchen starts whistling a song.
Lan Wangji is on his feet before he’s aware of moving. The waitress behind the counter calls out to him, but subsides when she sees his official cultivator regalia. He strides past her and into the kitchen.
The whistler is currently folding himself in half to fit under the industrial sink. All Lan Wangji can see are black jeans, a tool-box at his side. Beat-up vans with no socks, ankles thin and pale.
It can’t be him. It can’t—he’d seen him fall. Dangling off the edge of the Wen headquarters, a skyscraper high enough to obscure the sun. His arm aching, aching. His heart, aching, aching, beating warm for the final time.
He wraps a hand around the whistler’s ankle.

Modern with Magic is one of my favorite types of AU, and I love remixes that take several pieces and manage to piece them together into a cohesive narrative, and this does both things so beautifully. The characters read as both canon-compliant and yet perfectly modern in just a few, well-chosen details. Stunning.
