Fresh flowers always sat on the center of the small table in the kitchen by the window, colorful cushions on the couch, trinkets she picked up from the bookstore. It wasn’t much, but it was enough. Her things kept her company, even if her heart yearned for more.
Until Mike. Mike, who left everything and everyone behind to be with her. Who slowly started to make this place his own as well—that’s when she started to really notice the changes.

El lay in bed that night, feeling so much in her chest. She’d heard it be called overwhelmed. Her mission to find new hobbies had been going better than she had imagined. She hadn’t wanted to admit it to herself in the beginning, but she had felt some fear going in. Fear that she wouldn’t be good at anything, fear that she already missed out on precious opportunities to learn something new. How wrong she had been.

Having her back in his life felt nothing short of a miracle. One that he would never stop being grateful for. When she smiled, when she laughed, when she merely existed beside him–Mike was full of a joy–a gratitude–he didn’t have words for. He wasn’t sure there even were adequate words in the English language. He could say that he was so happy it brought him to tears, or that things felt somehow lighter than ever before. But those sentiments would always fall short of the intensity of his elation.

“It’s like something’s been on your mind for a while and you’re not—you’re just keeping it to yourself.”
Her throat works. “Am I not allowed to do that?”
She doesn’t mean to sound defensive, but the words come out like that anyway. Mike blinks, a little surprised and she can’t blame him for it, but the gentleness of his voice doesn’t fade. “Of course you are,” he says with a nod. Never one to deny her anything.
It sends an aching pang through her chest. He’s always on her side, puts her above everyone else—including himself. He has shown it to her time and time again, proved to her repeatedly that nothing is more important to him than she is. And that—that worries her.
