Henry knew it was time to go.
When he reached the safety of the porch and dropped into a chair, he realized he was shaking. He closed his eyes and listened to the ocean’s sagacious night voice.
Things would get better.
The longing for Alex was only so intense tonight because they’d been apart a long time. And then there was the one-bed thing, of course.
But in case it didn’t get better, he had a Plan.
Had made it, in fact, as he watched Alex’s body slide closer to him in the darkness.
Alex knew nothing about his sexual past. So Henry would say he was discovering an interest in men and ask him for advice and even training. An outlet for his need — without jeopardizing their thriving friendship.
It was a rash, risky plan. But at least it was a plan. -

And the dude is older. He dresses like a librarian, and he hardly even looks up from his book when Alex is getting out of the pool.
None of it makes any sense.
Whatever. He’ll get through the next two months somehow.

Or: During an inadvisable spot of dating years back, Alex and Nora made a game out of making extensive lists of celebrities they could hook up with without it being cheating. One breakup and several years later, Alex meets someone on his list for the very first time at a charity gala and decides it's appropriate to tell him all about it.

He spots Henry easily – a tall lighthouse of tousled blond hair – talking to a girl who is clearly into him. His expression looks perfectly polite, but he’s subtly leaning away, and he looks tense.
So, Alex makes an impulsive decision.

Or: Alex is so very definitely straight, so pretending to be Henry’s boyfriend to get him out of an awkward situation should just be a fun little pastime - except that he doesn't really want to stop, and he has no idea why. “Fuck off, sweetheart,” he laughs, a soundbite of the sun. Henry forces himself not to physically react, the term of endearment sweet and menacingly familiar coming from Alex’s lips. It’s been years. “You know they’re useful.”
“Ah yes, eyelashes, truly a formidable instrument in managing international relations.”
Alex grins, and Henry is too late to catch the slightest downward lilt on the corner of his mouth, “Worked on you once, didn’t it?”
Oh, did that ache.
