A lie to bring comfort to everyone who was there to experience it's darkness. The truth was that he didn't destroy it, he simply found a way to cage it so he could better confront it at another time. But is it a terrible thing to want what the others had? Perhaps that's not the right 'want' when the others had symbiosis with two souls and Malik just has a single fractured one. His other half akin to a parasite.
It doesn't stop him from trying.
