“Viktor.” Jayce's voice is harsh, heavy with sleep. He runs his hand down his face. “Is this…” He swallows hard. “Real?”
Jayce was always the one to extend a hand to Viktor. To reach for his shoulder in a steadying hold. Now, it’s Viktor who reaches out, taking Jayce’s hand in his. It’s warm, tips of his fingers calloused, palm eclipsing his own. He cups Jayce’s hand between both of his, thumbs rubbing over Jayce’s knuckles. “It’s real, Jayce.” Viktor makes his voice clear, steady, despite his own turmoil. “You are here. We are both here, in this bed.”
Viktor and Jayce navigate a new place, and a familiar, tangled mess of feelings.

Some of them,” Sarmenti jerks a finger up the road, “I wouldn’t trust as far as I can throw them.” He shakes his head. “You want to do good, you’re better off somewhere you won’t croak in the middle of some unspeakable filth.”
“That would likely be my fate, as it is. I would rather spend the last of my days with my sword in my hands.”
Sarmenti wonders how long that resolve will last. The thought leaves a sour taste in his mouth. “Suit yourself, then,” he says with a shrug. “But you can’t say I didn’t warn you.”

The false light of the window gave no indication as to the time of day, and Jayce didn’t much care to check. It would be another night sleeping here, another day of fruitless research, another day of more questions than answers. The lab never felt so empty before, and he wonders if that’s how Viktor felt, those nights he spent there alone, carving runes into his skin, offering his blood to the Hexcore. Those nights he reshaped himself, and Jayce had no idea.

Jayce catches Viktor’s arm, as if on instinct. “Hey, uh—help me with my speech?” It’s not quite an excuse. Right after being asked by Heimerdinger, he penned about five drafts before their testing in the lab. Surely Viktor’s expertise couldn’t hurt.
Viktor tilts his head. “I’m afraid I cannot say what makes a good speech.” Jayce holds his gaze, and something must show on his face, because Viktor adds, “But I suppose I could spare the time, if you are desperate.”
Jayce nods. He isn’t, but he is desperate for Viktor’s company.
