“Yes,” Stede informs him. “I was thinking about it at work and I realized I hadn’t checked any of these dates in forever, Ed. You could’ve gotten sick— either one of us could’ve gotten very sick, I should be doing a better job. This is— This is inexcusable.”
“It’s not that bad,” Ed tries to assure him.
“Not that bad?” Stede echoes, whirling with a dry box of uncooked macaroni in his hand. “What if you had eaten something that had spoiled? Or Alma, or Louis? What if you got sick? You could’ve easily—”
“But we didn’t,” Ed stops him.

Look, kissing him on the deck had probably been Ed’s first mistake.
But there he’d appeared, wild-eyed and pink-cheeked and alive.
Stede was fucking alive.
So he'd kissed him. Hard. Sucked the surprised little gasp right from his mouth. They’d collided, all dry lips and coarse stubble and greedy tongues dragging; hands fisted into hair and hips held flush.
A moment of recklessness, stupidity. A fleeting thing. It only took long enough for the taste of Stede to get into Ed’s mouth. For his dick to get just a little hard. For a whine to unfurl from Stede’s throat and roll hot against his cheek, scorching him.
And then Ed had remembered.
