“Yes,” Stede informs him. “I was thinking about it at work and I realized I hadn’t checked any of these dates in forever, Ed. You could’ve gotten sick— either one of us could’ve gotten very sick, I should be doing a better job. This is— This is inexcusable.”
“It’s not that bad,” Ed tries to assure him.
“Not that bad?” Stede echoes, whirling with a dry box of uncooked macaroni in his hand. “What if you had eaten something that had spoiled? Or Alma, or Louis? What if you got sick? You could’ve easily—”
“But we didn’t,” Ed stops him.

But there he’d appeared, wild-eyed and pink-cheeked and alive.
Stede was fucking alive.
So he'd kissed him. Hard. Sucked the surprised little gasp right from his mouth. They’d collided, all dry lips and coarse stubble and greedy tongues dragging; hands fisted into hair and hips held flush.
A moment of recklessness, stupidity. A fleeting thing. It only took long enough for the taste of Stede to get into Ed’s mouth. For his dick to get just a little hard. For a whine to unfurl from Stede’s throat and roll hot against his cheek, scorching him.
And then Ed had remembered.

“Oh,” Stede says, and feels even worse than embarrassed. “This— That’s not what they call these things, is it? Is—”
“No, no,” Ed interrupts him. “No, we can call it a date.” He leaves the drink cart behind so he can join Stede at his side, perched on the edge of the sofa. Ed, though, leans into the cushions at the back, and Stede follows his lead, tilting in beside him. “Our first date. I like the sound of that, Stede. How about you?”
or: stede owns a bookstore down the street from the lounge where ed plays piano. an impulsive decision leads to an electric first meeting and the feeling that they both might have met their soulmate.

Stede looked around at the exclamation and barely had time to process the man moving directly towards him, arms out open wide.
The club was dark and loud and not for the first time since he’d crossed over the threshold of the door, the bouncer not even asking for his ID, did he wonder how he’d let himself be talked into coming out for a night of “dancing, drinking, and hopefully, a good dicking.” Lucius’ words, not his own.
On instinct, he found his arms wrapping around the stranger as the other man stepped up to him, wrapping him in a tight hug.
“Please just go with it,” he heard briefly in his ear before there was a warm pair of lips pressing against his own.

After that he felt equal to checking the group chat. It read like sports commentary (he assumed). Things started out fine, with a few nice and correct comments about how hot he and Ed looked. Then there were some grainy but damning photos of the two of them groping and a tidal wave of WTFs and LMAOs followed, along with some impressed and baffled comments about how long they had been kissing for. Great. Wonderful.

Ed's teaching a cocktail class, thinking about the one Stede attended. But Stede's long gone, and Ed doesn't know why.
And then, a knock at the door.
He can’t say why it happened but it sure had happened. They were there, after Stede finished for the day. Normal. It was pouring rain and the bar was empty. Regular. Ed closed early, because that’s a fucking perk of owning the place. Standard. They’d killed the music in favor of the rain pounding at the skylights and played cribbage at the bar.
All of it an average Tuesday night.
Except that Stede had been pouting about losing, listing the points in his crib with stubborn slowness, like if he stalled enough some more fifteens would materialize. Ed was tired of falling in love because he’d momentarily forgotten that it’s not the fall that kills you—it’s the ground.
So he’d kissed him. A small soft thing, the nervous thrum of Ed’s heartbeat making his head spin and his balance on the stool precarious.
“Sore loser,” Ed had said into the space between their smiles, and then started shuffling cards with a wink.
