She freezes.

She looks down at the photo, taken by some resourceful paparazzo, of Jinu waving goodbye as he slips out the back of her condo building. In the background, blurry but still obviously her, is Rumi.

She and Mika said they are going to be friends. There’s been some vague discussions of ‘somewhere down the line’, which, she’ll admit, is something that makes her feel very excited, but for now, friends. She knows she’s not ready for anything more than that, not yet. Hence the compartmentalizing.
She can do that. She can set aside any lingering romantic or sexual feelings she has for Mika and focus on just being friends. Besides, Mika might not end up moving to Chicago. This could all be a non-issue, really.

It’s been two months since she officially moved to Chicago; two months of being around Jules at work every day, just like back in Seattle. She and Jules aren’t dating technically, or at least they’re not girlfriends; but they still spend a good amount of time together. They’re still working on rebuilding a friendship before they add anything else to it, which is a much healthier and more mature decision than a hook-up at a conference. Which they’re not ignoring, exactly, but they’re moving past it. They hang out multiple evenings every week and Jules has been spending her days off showing Mika the city and they eat lunch together most days. They don’t hold hands, and they definitely don’t kiss, or anything like that. Good, old-fashioned platonic friends, until they decide that they’re ready for something more. It’s completely fine, a boundary they both agreed on, and Mika is definitely not going crazy.

She’s honestly not expecting it when Jules walks on stage for the panel.
She should have known. Or maybe she should have looked more closely at the brochure with its list of speakers. She knows that Jules has been working in Cardio, and has been doing research, and has been making big strides in her field. And it’s a Cardio conference, one of the biggest events of the year. So it’s not crazy that Jules would be here, or that she’d be presenting some of her case studies. But she figured that Jules was still in Seattle, and wouldn’t be coming all the way out to Miami for a three day conference.
Which leaves Mika in the third row of the lecture hall, seeing her ex for the first time in seven years, and feeling totally unprepared.

Jules blinks open her eyes, and sees a messy tangle of dark hair resting on her chest, tucked under her arm. Mika, it seems, sleeps like a koala, and she’s attached herself to Jules like she’s climbing a tree. Jules has no complaints. She likes the warmth of Mika, pressed up against her. She likes the puffs of breath against her collarbone. She likes the sense of security and peace she feels, that she’s not sure she’s ever experienced when waking up next to another person.
She tugs Mika even closer, pressing a kiss against her forehead. Because she feels a rush of affection for this girl, and for once, she doesn’t have to try to suppress it. It’s incredible, waking up next to her.

Mika crosses the locker room, approaching Jules slowly, getting into her space. To her delight, she watches as Jules’s gaze flicks down to Mika’s mouth. “Jules Millin, are you asking me out?” she teases.
Jules doesn’t back down. She reaches out, tugging lightly on the cuff of Mika’s sleeve, urging Mika to come closer. Mika obeys. “I’m trying to cash in on that rain check,” she murmurs. Mika licks her lips. “If that’s alright with you.”

It was a fluke, Mika reminds herself. She doesn’t actually want to kiss Jules. Especially because Jules is straight, and Mika had just imagined things. Even if Mika wanted to kiss Jules (which, of course, she didn’t), there was no world where Jules would have wanted to kiss her back. It was a fluke, and Mika is going to move on. She just needs to talk to Jules and clear the air and then they can all move past this. And sure, it’s bound to be a humiliating conversation with Jules as the other girl reaffirms that she is, of course, straight, and, of course, not at all interested in Mika that way, but sometimes you’ve gotta rip the bandaid off to let the cut heal. Mika learned that at some point in med school, she’s pretty sure.

Mika is asleep next to her, sprawled out on her back, and Jules is somehow wedged in the small space between Mika and the wall, and she’s started to seriously intrude on the other woman’s space. One of her arms is curled against Mika’s chest. Her other arm, which she’d been sleeping on, rests at her collar bone. Her leg is tucked onto Mika’s thigh.

That’s the first thing you notice as you step into the diving pavilion. It’s early, just after eight o’clock in the morning, and you were just rubbing the sleep from your eyes and thinking about how it was criminal that you have to wake up that early during the summer , when you look across the tables and see her sitting there wearing your shirt. It’s clearly yours, even though you all own the same obnoxiously orange one. This one she’s wearing is too big on her; a little too long, bunched around her waist. And on her arms, the sleeves go down almost all the way to her elbows. And you know how her camp shirts look on her; you’ve only been going to camp together for the better half of a decade at this point, and you’ve literally seen her grow into these shirts. And that one is yours.
