impulsively read this without knowing anything about mononoke or onmyoji and was utterly floored by how beautiful this was. i immediately went to go watch mononoke and downloaded onmyoji, came back to re-read this, and fell even more in love with how incredible this fic was, down to the smallest details. would happily re-read over and over again (and already have)

Ysayle rolls over on her side and props her head up on her hand, studying Eydis in the low light that’s starting to seep through the tent walls. The colors have not yet been returned to the world and the monochrome makes nothing feel real as Eydis opens her mouth and bleeds from it.
The Warrior of Light's Echo allows her to see the death of an individual before it comes to pass. She wishes Ysayle Dangoulain was the exception.

The foam lathers but no matter how hard she scrubs, the stains never quite go away; they burrow into muscle and sinew and settle in the crevices of her veins. Her heart beats, her conscience bleeds into shadow. Her blood turns dark as ink.
this is one of my favorite quotes because it's just so lyrical -- the perfect balance between introspective and horrific, loved it

Bast took hold of his soul in her mighty jaws and lifted it free of his body. She gave him a warning shake, just as she would a misbehaving kitten, and set him back. With one careful claw, she tweaked his path through time into a twisting loop. Wayward and abandoned though he was, N’Jadaka was still of her tribe. He could set things right, if given the chance.
Erik gets a do-over. Erik gets a lot of do-overs. Or: Erik Killmonger's own personal version of Groundhog Day, only with a lot more murder, dying, trips to the ancestral plane, awkward family conversations, and divine intervention.

heartbreaking and heartwarming all in one, all with a vibe that fits seamlessly from the movie and with the characters. the oakland part and the penultimate loop in particular were beautiful and made me almost cry (and some of the way the loops ended were delightfully humorous)

Summary
Crowley attempts to sleep off recent events. It's a form of self-defense.
Aziraphale putters, and thinks, and finally acts.
Part 1 takes place between the bus ride home from the apocalypse and ice cream in the park.
Humans will go about and muck things up and perform minor miracles of their own, and that is still joyous, wonderful. Because Aziraphale loves humanity—more than he was meant to. It's not generalized enough, a kindly and paternal distance from them. It's up close and messy: he's coveted their food, glutted himself on their words, succumbed to the sloth of a long afternoon with their wine.
And still, it is not nearly as close and messy as the way he loves Crowley.
