Summary
At first, Dustin’s not sure what it is that rouses him from sleep. It’s quiet in the room, and dark, and he’s warm and exceedingly comfortable where he’s tucked up against Steve’s side. It feels like it might just be a fluke until he registers it; the slow, careful way with which Steve is running his fingers through Dustin’s hair, his touch light like he’s trying to not wake Dustin up.

Childhood sweethearts, the women all coo whenever his mother brings him with her to the store or around her friends. They pinch his cheeks and grab his wrist to get a better look at the mark, and his mother only ever seems to mind the attention when Steve shies away from it – she seizes him by the shoulders then and holds him in place so that the ladies can look their fill, smiling like she’s pleased by their reactions.

“It’s to the left,” Dustin’s tinny voice tells him. “Over.”
Steve rolls his eyes and reaches over to grab the radio off the passenger seat. “I know how to read a map, y’know,” he says, speaking into the thing as he presses the button. ‟Why don’t you focus on not running anyone over instead, okay? Over.”

‟Dunno,” she says, not even bothering to look up from the page she’s on.
‟I was kinda hoping for a larger audience,” Dustin informs both her and Lucas, who’s conked out on the couch on his back, arm covering his face as he dozes. ‟Y’know, seeing as I have an announcement to make.”
