This story has lived in my mind since writing The Quiet Fight and Built to Break—where love made everything simple, and choosing each other was never in question. This time, they aren’t there yet. This time, they want to be everything to each other… but they don’t know how. So yes... I am making the poor guy sick again.
A cancer diagnosis forces Shane and Ilya to stop pretending they have time. They don’t slowly fall into each other—they crash into it, trying to make up for seven years of almosts and what-ifs. But illness doesn’t magically fix who they are. The same walls, fears, and habits that kept them apart are still there—only now they have to face them while fighting something much bigger than themselves.

Ilya felt like he’d finally woken up. He felt like he’d been living in denial for most of his life and reality had finally caught up with him. He’d tried to keep it at bay for so long, to push it away with sex, cars, hockey, Shane and playing house, but what he always knew would happen had happened at last. The fear that he’d never be good enough, never do anything of substance or importance was now a reality. He couldn't pretend anymore.

What starts as a confrontation in Ilya’s house a week later quickly devolves into a desperate, physical reclamation. Ilya abandons his logic, marking Shane and forcing him to admit that no one else could ever be enough.

Another red light.
“Ilya?” Shane leans closer this time, brushing his knuckles lightly against Ilya’s jaw.
“Where does it hurt?” His voice is tight, urgent. “Talk to me.”
No answer.
Ilya’s head has tipped toward the window again. His lashes rest against fever-flushed skin, cheeks burning red under the passing streetlights. His breathing is too shallow — each inhale catching faintly at the end like it hurts to pull air in.
“Ilya?” Shane presses. “Hey. Tell me where it hurts.”
Nothing. The silence slams into him.
“Fuck—” His hand tightens on Ilya’s thigh. He gives it a firmer shake. “Fuck, fuck, fuck. No. Ilya. Hey.”Ilya doesn’t get sick often.
But when he does, it’s never small.
Fever is the one thing that can kill him.
He knows it. The doctors know it. The ER staff knows it.
Shane doesn’t.

Ilya stiffens at that. He doesn’t know. It’s hard to tell if he’s been feeling worse when his body and mind have been on autopilot for so long that he doesn’t really feel anything at all. In lieu of a verbal answer, which he doesn’t think he can conjure up, he simply shrugs.
Shane doesn’t press, simply letting them sit in the quiet for a moment while Ilya thinks of a way to express the absolute void that lives inside his mind.
“I don’t feel much at all,” he admits, voice barely a whisper. That truth scares him more than anything.

All in all, things had gone well. Still, on the drive home, as he was sitting behind the wheel, the sun already well into setting and Ilya smiling contently in the passenger seat, most definitely full from all the pasta and vodka he’d consumed, Shane couldn’t help but feel as if something was off. It bothered him but he couldn’t do much about it, since he couldn’t quite place his finger on what it was. And that bothered him so incredibly much.
Or, what if Shane and Ilya had gotten married post-episode 6/post-book 1.
