Summary
Home, this small town filled with too big now impossible dreams. This small town with its big walls meant safety, a calm before a storm of the tangible reminders of why it fell apart, of why Anna wasnt here anymore, of what Maria tried and failed to blame. The walls were a tangible stopper on the flow of anger and resentment that tried to fill her as she remembered what she could have saved. There was a leak somewhere, letting out careful streams akin to the mycelium that now crawled across the country.

Summary
The next thing he sees and knows isn’t a dream is Ellie’s little hand reaching over his heart and balling up his shirt in her fist. Her head lays on his shoulder and her ear presses against his chest. He feels her small exhales and they bring fresh, unbidden tears to his eyes. She doesn’t notice his half-lidded gaze, but he sees just fine as she brings the hand still clutched around his flannel up to her nose and presses it to her face like it’s the only thing keeping her from floating away.
Almost on muscle memory alone, Joel aims to press a kiss to her hair where it’s up to his own nose, but he can’t quite get it right. Still, his cheek ends up against the soft tendrils of Ellie’s brown strands and he thinks it’s enough. He hopes it gives her some meager comfort.
It’s all he has to offer.
(Inspired by the famous picture of Ellie sleeping all curled up on the forest floor during episode 2 - essentially an exploration of how Ellie becomes more than cargo to Joel through Ellie's very cute sleeping habits)

Summary
Ellie and Joel have settled in Jackson, but Ellie is struggling to adjust. Particularly with hiding her bite mark and what the scar has come to mean to her after their journey.
As the trauma of David lingers, so too do feelings of failure and other losses. Joel is not prepared for her plan to get rid of the bite. Not that she lets him in on it.

Joel dies and Ellie cries and mourns, and if she wakes up screaming every night after that, no one dares to say a word. Joel dies Ellie cries and laments, and one day, one day she finally stops screaming until her throat bleeds to wake up.
And then she wakes up and ask where he is, and Joel has to die again, and the bile in Tommy's throat is too vile, too rough, for him to swallow.

It’s not meant to be a difficult journey, but it’s taken them a bit longer than expected due to a brief encounter with a group of raiders. They weren’t exceptionally difficult by any means, but Ellie did manage to get herself thrown into a tree and slashed across the ribs with a knife.
She’d told Joel she was fine, and she was!
She just… might not be, anymore.
a one-off thing where i am a little mean to ellie but make it up to her in the end. self indulgent hurt/comfort nonsense.

Ellie clings to Tommy’s arm that forms a bar across her neck and shoulder, brown eyes wide with fear but fixed on him with utter faith that he will know what to do, that he will fix it. He can’t stop his hands from shaking as they hang uselessly in the air in front of him, one palm up in surrender while the other hand reaches toward Tommy in supplication.
“Tommy, little brother, give me the gun. Just put down the gun and we can figure—“
Tommy swings the pistol toward Ellie, and the bottom drops out of Joel’s world.
