“Let me stop you right there bud, mom and dad will kill me if I let you stuff yourself sick so how about just one of those options?”
“Funnel cake. Definitely funnel cake.” He responded with determination, pulling a chuckle from Annie.
“Alright we’ll get funnel cake.” Taking his hand, Annie started weaving through the crowd of Circus go-ers towards the rows of food vendors. She and Eli gazed around in wonder at the colorful lights and attractions ranging from a tall ferris wheel to the group of clowns entertaining a crowd of children by the Big Top. Annie tried to scout out an attraction that could keep Eli mollified until the main act when a large sign caught her eye:

Summary
Instead of Alina and Mal being saved from the whaler by Sturmhond's crew, Mal is accidentally killed by the sea whip and Alina is saved alongside Genya from the Darkling.
They decide to return together to the Little Palace and team up to defeat the Darkling (and every small decision diverges the plot further from the original books, into a completely different outcome). They find out the villains have their reasons and are not soulless as they are thought to be, and the people that others look up to are the real villains.
Alina is bolder than in the original series because we want the plot to go forward in a more logical way - and also the protagonist deserves a real character arc.
Also, mind the tags. The first few chapters may seem a little darker, but then the fun begins :)Edit: just updated the last chapter! If you'd only like a glimpse at what could become of Ravka if things were different in the sense explained above, and you could use a good laugh, I highly encourage you to read at least this!

the Darkling, commander of the Second Army, summoner of the shadows. alina comes into his life with a light he's never know, but also with a darkness he's all too familiar with.
or: my take on if alina knew she was Grisha her whole life and if her and the Darkling were truly equals.

The bond, Ben is convinced- or the Force, or the lingering remnants of Snoke’s power, or whatever keeps patching them through to each other at the worst possible moment- has a sorry sense of humor.
This, though- walking out of the fresher with a towel around his waist, wearing considerably less than the memorable moment when she had asked him if he had a cowl, or something, only to find her standing next to his bed- might be the worst joke the bond has played to date.
(Someone spikes Rey's drink, and the bond decides this is Ben's problem.)
