    In another world, where they are not friends, where they had never shared hearty meals and late night calls, had never witnessed each other struggle with the grief and indignity of injuries, Joe would have crowed at his failed attempts, he would probably be making a crude remark about how the fault lies in Nicky's shapely ass, which Joe is sure has won Nicky most of his sponsorships

    But in this world, after those few months of rehab together in Monaco and the lockdown in Tokyo and everything else in between, Joe is genuinely devastated for him.

    They are still at a stalemate. The battle is not over yet. They still need to outperform each other.

    But astaghfirullah he is tired. And he can see that Nicky is too when Joe catches Nicky's eyes as he picks himself up from the crash mat. Nicky gives him that little shrug and his signature, almost imperceptible half smile.

    So Joe asks the official.

    "Can we have two golds?"

    Or, Olympian high jumpers Joe al-Kaysani and Nicky di Genova's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad five years, which culminate in a historic win for both, in more ways than one.
