Eddie’s in the middle of a sentence when the bullet rushes past just over his shoulder with a whine so familiar it almost pulls him out of his body. He ducks violently to the left, part pure human instinct and part too much experience, and whips around to locate the source. But then the second sound registers: the heavy thunk of bullet meeting flesh.
Behind him, Buck coughs.

There are two seats left in the compartment when Joe gets on the Tube, and he chooses the seat beside a tall, aloof man who is impeccably dressed despite the heat. Joe feels crumpled, like a five-pound note shoved into the pocket of his jeans and forgotten for days. The top two buttons of his shirt are undone and his sleeves are rolled up to the elbow; there’s sweat collecting behind his knees and at the small of his back, and he feels sore and grubby. He knocks the other man with his backpack as he swings it around to place it in his lap.
Or, it's possible Joe should have stuck to crossword puzzles.
