Summary
Imogen left home looking for answers, but something else found her instead.
Buried in the bowels of a government facility with a set of other strange prisoners, it quickly becomes clear that there's no getting answers, much less getting out, without playing along with the tests, training, and inhumane treatment she's subjected too.
But how far is Imogen willing to give herself over to a programme that promises to reshape her entirely? And what will she have to do to her fellow inmates in order to find freedom, and the truth that she's been searching for?

Summary
Vilya fixes her with a look. A look that says ‘I am your mother, and I will not be denied.’
And all Keyleth wants to say is ‘my mother is a child’s memory that I had almost forgotten, and you are only her ghost, come to haunt me again.’
She wants to say ‘I am the Voice of the fucking Tempest, and you are a member of the Air Ashari, and you must do as the Tempest commands, no matter if I am your daughter.’, even if that is not at all how leadership actually works here.
And in some quiet corner of her mind, half mad from hours, days of unending pain, she wants to say ‘you should be the Voice of the Tempest. You should be here, instead of me.’ And it is this last voice that is so disgusting to her, that she cannot help but turn away from her mother.
---
In the aftermath of the Apogee Solstice, Keyleth's mother waits at her bedside.

Summary
Nancy opened her mouth, but she couldn’t find the words to explain. Couldn’t find the words to speak the fear she felt, or the joy that hid behind it. Like with so much of what she felt about Robin, she decided it was better not to speak about it at all. Better to leave it unsaid.
“Come on. We’ve got work to do.”
---
Hawkins has gone to hell, and Nancy's thrown herself into triage. It doesn't leave much time for anything else, not even the person right besides her.

Summary
As an ex-apprentice of the Belanger Circle, Nicolette knows what it is to be on the wrong end of power. Then she is kidnapped across realms and implanted with a mind flayer tadpole — like she doesn’t have enough strange Others slithering around her head already. Now a True Soul, Nicolette has access to authority beyond anything she has ever known, and it will be up to her fellow tadpole victims to persuade her not to use it. Good thing they all are such paragons of responsibility.

Summary
In a heated duel at the height of a losing battle, Jaina casts a last-ditch portal. It's meant to send the Warchief to the center of Alliance command, where she can be subdued and put on trial for her crimes. Unfortunately the portal sends them to another plane entirely—where Jaina, stranded in unfamiliar wilderness and crippled by the magical backlash, finds herself dependent on the assistance of an experienced ranger.
Mutual need allows them to hammer out a truce, but even that can't keep them from falling back into old habits; once through the shock, neither of them wants to rely on the other, and they're both quite willing to lie, double cross, or otherwise manipulate the other to achieve their own ends. The tentative ceasefire seems doomed to failure, until contact with the residents of this strange new planet makes it horrifyingly clear exactly what kind of civilization they have stumbled upon.
Suddenly, everything has become simpler—and infinitely more complicated.
(Or: An archmage and a banshee take it upon themselves to fix Gor by any means necessary.)

Summary
Veilguard's companion questlines are the heart of the game, and also clearly where they expect to win the player's. It is incredibly frustrating, then, that they are all so - not even bad as uneven and unexplored.
So, I am going to spend thousands and thousands of words working through my frustrations going through each one, finding what seems like compelling themes and conflicts in it, and laying out how I'd have written it to focus on them.

Summary
When Aelwyn comes out of the forest, she is nineteen, which is to say that she is eighteen, which is to say that she is nineteen minus one. Which is to say that her hands are nineteen and her head is eighteen, which is to say that her hands are trembling and her head is full of fog and clouds and a heavy, heavy, heavy rain.

Summary
Adaine’s fingers have been broken, all ten of them. It's an old injury, something that they must have done to her near the beginning, but they look like they were never set back right.
Aelwyn holds Adaine’s left hand in hers and traces a finger tip down her sister's crooked fingers. “Somatic components,” she murmurs. “Can't make a fist like this, huh, Adaine.”
“When the sky begins to bleed, so ends the night,” Adaine whispers. “Let the stars find new homes outside of the sky and walk once more along the broken earth.”
“Darling, are you prophesying the end of the Court of Stars right now?” Aelwyn asks. She holds Adaine's hand very gently. Adaine is in no state to tell her if it hurts when Aelwyn squeezes it. Adaine is in no state to tell her if anything hurts.
