Or, a series of somewhat connected stories loosely based on the premise of five times Phillip helped Barnum out, and that time Barnum returned the favor. Though in most of these you'd be hard pressed to tell who is helping whom more. And maybe that's the point.
Generally Gen, though if you'd care to read these as vaguely Barlyle I certainly won't stop you. (As if anyone could.)

Hob Gadling had seen many strange occurrences over the last 600 years. So, really, he should be able to deal with two teenage boys trying to steal off him. Hob cleared his throat loudly behind the curly haired one, who was just reaching up to unhook the glass off the wall.
“Excuse me,” Hob said with a strained smile. “I think you’ll find that that glass is my property.”
The boy opened and closed his mouth like a fish, as if he had no clue that they would get caught trying to steal during rush hour. Hob waited a few seconds before reaching out to teen-thief-number-one in an attempt to get his glass back, before the boy snatched it away quickly.
“No, don’t touch it!” He cried, cradling it in his gloved hands. “It’s cursed.”
“It’s what now?”

One day, in 2011, he met two teenage boys. They’d been spying on him, and Hob had been mostly amused. He’d been somewhat horrified to find out that the 16 and 17-year-olds were dead. They were ghosts, and they were forever stuck.
He’d been kind to them, or he tried. He explained his situation, watching with sympathy as the two ghost boys looked terrified at the mention of Death. He’d offered them a place to sleep- to which he was informed ghosts don’t sleep (but they still ended up curled on his couch, eyes shut as they rested).
And slowly, little by little-
