Summary
It’s a perfectly normal day until it isn’t. Shane is hurt in a mugging and he and Ilya have to find a way through injury and healing together.
He should just give the man his wallet. That’s what they say to do, isn’t it? Shane should hand over his wallet then the man would leave. There was no reason to be a hero or a tough guy, there was nothing in his wallet worth the kind of trouble someone who hides their face and attacks from behind is capable of.

Summary
Mac hadn’t looked in a mirror since it had happened.
He knew how the bruises felt, the swollen tenderness shadowing his eye, the scabs tugging at his lip and cheek, the sore marks mottling his jaw in sickly greens. He didn’t want to see them.

Summary
Mac had never been sent to the principal’s office before
Back then he’d done everything he could to avoid being noticed. He’d worked hard, earned good grades, kept his head down and never put so much as a single toe out of line.
He tapped out a hup-two-three-four that began with the little finger of his left hand and marched it’s way over to the pinky on his right then went back to where it started and drummed out the staccato rhythm all over again on the arms of his chair.
On the arms of the chair that was outside the principal’s office.
The chair he was sat in outside the principal’s office.
An incident in school makes Mac think about the new shape of his family, and wonder if he really is a nerdy as everyone says.

Summary
Jack was so glad he wasn’t a teenager anymore.
His hair was dusted with grey, his hip cracked when he twisted and the grunt he made whenever he hauled himself off the sofa came from the very depths of his soul, but getting older did have it’s advantages.
Having the certainty that all things pass was one bonus of having lived for more than a couple of decades, having had time to perfect a never fail recipe for a really good pasta sauce was another, but having a well grounded confidence was one of the best. Jack knew who he was, wherever he was so wherever or whatever the situation he felt at home in his own skin.
Mac hadn’t got that yet.
Poor kid.
When Mac gets jealous while he’s out on a date with Katie he and Jack have to deal with the dark place the green eyed monster came from.

Summary
Mac and Jack go searching for something and find more than they expect
“Are you sure they’re in here?” he called, raising his voice a little so Jack could hear him.
“I’m sure,” Jack called back, “I have a clear memory of shoving ‘em in there. Or I have a mostly clear memory of shoving ‘em in there.”

Summary
“I mean, you— you say I’m perfect. That it’s, that everything we do together is… is perfect.”
“Yes, perfect,” Ilya says adamantly.
“Okay. But. I mean. I like feedback, you know. If there are things you haven’t said because you don’t want to hurt my feelings, you could say. If there’s any judgement of my technique, like, that you’ve been doing silently in your head.”
“I never judge you silently,” Ilya says. He pulls back a bit, twisting his neck so he can look Shane in the eye, frowning. “I judge you loudly. Is no fun if I don’t see your reaction.”
“Ha, ha.”
“Shane,” Ilya says. “Is this real worry you are having? I must know. You think I have… criticism of you, of sex with you? You think it is not perfect for me?”
---
Shane and Ilya navigate their sexual relationship, now that they're finally a couple.

Summary
But it’s true. David Hollander is normal about hockey. He has a life outside it. He goes to work at the Treasury. He goes on long walks. He volunteers at animal shelters. He puzzles. Well—he works on puzzles? Ilya still is not sure how the verbs work there.
The point is: David Hollander built a life outside of hockey that was fulfilling—that remains fulfilling. This, in its roundabout way, and though Ilya could never admit it, saves Ilya’s life.

Summary
Ilya puts his palms flat against the marble and pushes himself up. “She was a good mother,” he says, decisively, like it’s up to him. He says it, so it must be true. And it is, it has to be. The sun hides behind a wispy cloud, the light curling lacelike over him. “She really was, Shane.”
