He knows Marisol’s patience is thin at the moment, and laughing at her would ensure that he, too, had a very cold night.

The look she gives him promises retribution should he renege on his promise.

And so Rook Thorne became the first mortal to pass the golden gates of Arlathan in many an Age as she carefully picked the strange flower – the rose – from the earth before her. A single thorn pierced her thumb, and she bit back the cry of surprise, not wanting to alarm her father. She took a step, and then another, through the golden gates… and knew no more.
