“We’ll-” He starts, but Ellie’s voice interrupts him before he can make promises he doubts Tess will remember in about five minutes.
“Mama?” She asks, and he turns to look at her, peeking in through the doorway warily.
“Oh my God,” Tess says, in a voice so forlorn that he looks to her at once, sure he’s about to see a growing pool of blood on the white sheets over her lap.
Instead, though, he just sees his partner, misty-eyed, staring right at Ellie.

Tess, blessedly, comes to investigate his coughing fit. It’s an effort not to toss Ellie over and call it a day.
“Everything alright in here?” His partner asks, leaning casually against the doorframe.
“Where do babies come from?” Ellie asks, tilting her head back and almost overbalancing herself in the process, saved only by his hand on her back. She extends grabby hands when Tess crosses to them, Tess giving him a wry look.
“Curious about the birds and the bees, huh?” She asks, lifting Ellie and then settling on his lap, Ellie still in her arms.
He adjusts slightly to get more comfortable. It’s new, this sort of thing, Tess taking the initiative with new levels of intimacy.
He likes it more than a little.

His first reaction when the backpack he’s carrying starts fucking wiggling is irritation. It wouldn’t be the first time some juvenile fucker riding high on their own importance because FEDRA gives teenagers guns and calls it a day tried to pull a prank. He can only imagine what it is this time. A fucking raccoon? Bag of snakes?
He slings it down, irritated, and freezes when he hears an “Ow!”
An “Ow!” said in a very, very young voice.
“No,” he says at once, voice hard, like just saying it can make it not true. “Fucking-no.”
This isn’t happening, he thinks, as Tess stops to walk back to him. There’s no goddamn way there’s a fucking kid in-
The top of the backpack unsnaps and pops open.
And out emerges a tiny head with huge brown eyes and her hair in a little ponytail messy enough that he just knows she did it herself.
A little girl where there should have been drugs.
Jesus Christ.

“I thought you were gonna be mad at me,” she says, flicking her eyes up to him briefly before looking back to the snowglobe, giving it another shake, this one more restrained.
“I get why you wanna go out,” he says, sitting back. Apparently they’ll be having this little chat entirely in the hallway. “I’m not going to let you, but I get why you want to.”
She bites the inside of her cheek, thoughtful.
“You promise you’re not mad?” She asks. It’s not the first time he’s been asked this question. He’s pretty sure it won’t be the last.
“Promise,” he tells her. “Already forgotten.”
She looks at him then, a studying sort of look, and then she smiles.
“That’s just because you’re getting senile,” she says, like the little shit she is.
Perhaps he should reconsider letting her off the hook so easily.
