Summary
The first time she had seen humanity in Rozanov was the moment Shane fell, his skull a sickening crunch on the boards, the ice. It hadn’t been audible on the television, but she knew it had been there by the way every player had stopped almost immediately in fear.
Rozanov had a look, one that Yuna had never seen so clearly on his face before. It gave her pause as she got up to drive to the hospital they surely were taking her son to. It was the same face she was probably making at the thought of Shane being hurt, possibly in a season or career-ending way. It was confusing, seeing that on a face that seemed to automatically rest in a cocky smirk. She didn’t have time to analyze it, however. The medical team had called to tell them that they were taking him to Montreal General, and the head CT results weren’t in yet. She heard the nervousness in the voice of the man on the phone, one that suggested something Yuna wasn’t ready to think about.

Amy has been frantically ranting to the comms in her ear, and they’ve been racing towards a safehouse that Alex is eighty percent sure is not equipped to handle the bullet that is currently lodged somewhere in his organs. His stomach is doing somersaults and he’s starting to feel something in his throat. She glances over as much as she dares to while racing at breakneck speeds through the urban streets of Washington DC.
He’s still holding his hand in front of him and staring at his chest like it’s personally wronged him (technically, Alex reasons, it has) and Amy’s features arrange in some expression of horror.

Oh. He’s ducking under the covers, under Ilya’s shirt, crawling up until he’s fully inside it—head pillowed safely on Ilya’s chest. The love that rushes through Ilya feels catastrophic, and he chokes with it. “Shane,” his voice trembles. Ilya pulls him closer, always closer. “Shane.”
Shane makes a high, soft noise in his throat, burrowing deeper into Ilya—almost like he’s trying to crawl inside Ilya’s body. Ilya would let him, if it were possible. Would carve out a place for Shane within himself, offer it with his bruised and bloody palms. Here, all of this—is for you. Shane makes that noise again—soft, pleading, like a whine—and Ilya succumbs, is helpless to.
He recognises it for the wordless plea it is, and gives Shane exactly what he wants. “Shanebug,” Ilya says softly, and Shane melts into his chest, every last string holding him up cut. “I love you.”

A blaring alarm yanked him out of his panic like a fish out of water. He shot upright, flailing his limbs that were caught in something soft. Blurred splashes of colour steadily painted a picture of a bedroom he’d recognise anywhere. It was brighter now, light pouring in through partially shut curtains. His breath was heavy and he struggled making sense of how the hell he’d ended up in bed when just a moment ago, Ilya had–
“Hollander.” Ilya slurred, narrowing his eyes at him. “Turn that thing off.”

Alex looks up at the wall of cheese in front of him, wide-eyed and overwhelmed.
“Excuse me,” a polite voice next to him says, all posh and fancy. The owner of that voice could probably tell the difference between brie and camembert without needing to read the label. “You're in front of the Manchego.”
Alex glances to his left, to match a face to the accent. It's a very nice accent, and an even nicer face, framed by dark blonde hair that swoops perfectly over his left brow.
Hot Cheese Guy has obviously come straight from work, some kind of office job judging by his tie and button-up, but he’s shed a layer of uptight rigidity somewhere along his commute. The top button is undone, the tie knot loosened around his Adam's apple, and his cufflinks removed so he could roll his sleeves. He looks professional, but relaxed, and Alex is fucking into it.
He sneaks a look at the contents of Hot Cheese Guy’s basket. He's got chorizo wrapped in paper from the in-store deli, cage-free eggs, this rustic olive-riddled sourdough that looks delicious, and what appears to be artisan dog food, full of vegetables and bone broth.
